THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY, JOHN FORD, JUNE 4, 1942, PART ONE
Admiral Nimitz ordered John Ford, then a USN Lieutenant Commander assigned to the OSS, to film the Battle of Midway. Ford himself set up atop the USMC blockhouse near the aircraft hangar and the seaplane ramp on Midway. He knew the Japanese would attack the hangar. Other film crews were assigned throughout the area and afloat. The explosions seen on this Oscar winning documentary nearly cost Ford his life as he filmed it. He was severely wounded. The Marines did raise the flag during an intense part of the air attack. The USAAF, USMC and USA personnel ashore, only a few hundred men, didn't know the outgunned US Fleet was positioned off the island and they were prepared to take on the Japanese fleet alone and unaided. In a few minutes, after 95 years of preparation, the Japanese navy went from the most powerful offensive navy in the world to one that was on the defense ever after. Of course this documentary was made to raise the spirits of those of us on the homefront. I viewed the film in a theater in Charlottesville as a seven year old. The Allies were being battered all over the world by the Axis and the battle at Midway along with the raf's defense of Britain reversed that trend ... and the long march to victory was begun. Some historians suspect that the Doolittle Raid caused the Japanese high command to attack at Midway. (Source - The National Archives)
